Centre of Excellence for Coal Mine Methane at the 32nd edition of GZN

On 5–7 November 2025, the 32nd edition of the International Scientific and Technical Conference from the Mining Natural Hazards series was held, organised by the Central Mining Institute, together with the Mining Commission of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Katowice Branch.

This year's edition included seven thematic sessions:

1. Rock burst hazard

2. Seismic hazard

3. Aerological hazards

4. Stability of mining excavations

5. Session of the Centre of Excellence for Coal Mine Methane

6. Session of the Underground Construction Section of SITG

7. Session ‘Transformation of mining’ – GreenJOBS project

On the second day of the conference, the Centre of Excellence for Coal Mine Methane hosted a session devoted to the broad topic of methane from coal mines. The session was chaired by Mr Michał Drabik, who began by presenting the activities of the UNECE Expert Group on Coal Mine Methane and Just Transition and the International Centre of Excellence for Coal Mine Methane in Poland, aimed at reducing methane emissions from the coal sector worldwide. Next, Mr Artur Badylak outlined the activities of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa during his presentation entitled ‘Methane Emission Reduction – EU-co-financed projects implemented at JSW S.A.’. The impact of the methane regulation was presented by Mr Janusz Jureczka during his speech entitled ‘The pros and cons of the EU methane regulation in the context of Polish hard coal mining.’ Południowy Koncern Węglowy S.A. Zakład Górniczy ‘Janina’ was the subject of another presentation on the capture and use of gas obtained in the degassing process, presented by Mr Jacek Warchał. The panel ended with a discussion and a collective presentation on the quantification of methane emissions in hard coal mines – new metrological standards and implementation challenges, presented by Mr Grzegorz Plonka.
