A special event was the UNECE technical session – ‘Reducing Methane Emissions in the Mining Sector’, co-organised by ICE-CMM Poland and AGH University of Krakow, chaired by Prof. Marek Borowski. Representatives of scientific and industrial institutions from Poland and Vietnam, who presented current achievements and projects related to the reduction of methane emissions from coal mines attended the session.
The speakers included:
Zbigniew Lubosik (GIG-PIB) – presented the activities of ICE-CMM Poland and the directions of international cooperation within projects dedicated to reducing methane emissions.
Artur Badylak (JSW S.A.) – presented projects implemented by Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa related to the reduction of methane emissions and its economic use.
Damian Hendzel (LW Bogdanka S.A.) – discussed methods of monitoring methane emissions in deep mines in Poland and experiences with their implementation.
Prof. Marek Borowski (AGH University of Science and Technology) – presented the results of a comparison of measured and simulated emissions in Vietnamese coal mines, pointing to the possibilities of transferring Polish solutions to Vietnam.
Dr Renata Cicha-Szot (INiG-PIB) – presented an innovative approach to the design of isolation dams and drainage systems (LRDD) using integrated 3D models to predict methane emissions.
ICE-CMM Poland's participation in the VIET-POL 2025 conference highlighted the growing role of international scientific and industrial cooperation in the field of methane emission reduction. The presentations by Polish experts attracted considerable interest from Vietnamese partners and representatives of international organisations such as UNECE.
The discussed research results and industrial experience form the basis for further cooperation with Vietnamese institutions in the following areas:
implementation of methane emission reduction technologies in coal mines,
monitoring and forecasting emissions from mining excavations,
transfer of know-how and good practices in the field of methane safety,
promoting innovative solutions developed by ICE-CMM Poland.
The conference also discussed the possibilities of implementing Polish solutions in Vietnamese coal mines and joint research initiatives in the field of energy transition. ICE-CMM Poland confirmed its readiness to continue cooperation with Vietnamese partners and to jointly implement future projects within the framework of international and European programmes.
