One of the key thematic sessions was “Methane in hard coal mining - challenges in light of new EU regulations”, moderated by Zbigniew Lubosik (GIG-PIB) and Michał Drabik (UNECE). The event was attended by experts from leading scientific institutions and representatives of mining companies, who discussed the latest research and technologies relating to the monitoring, capture and use of methane.
Numerous papers were presented during the session on topics such as:
Monitoring and reporting of methane emissions - modern methods of measurement in mines and analysis of their effectiveness.
New technologies to reduce emissions - including ventilation methane utilisation (VAM) plants and the infinite regulation of the expenditure of captured methane from goafs.
The impact of EU regulations on the future of mining - a discussion of the implications of new regulations for the mining sector.
Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa S.A., represented by Artur Badylak, Sebastian Swaczyna and other experts, presented activities related to the reduction of methane emissions and efforts to maximise the use of this gas for energy purposes. It was emphasised that JSW's strategy is based on effective methane management, which is in line with the European Union's climate goals and ensures the company's energy stability.
The conference was also an opportunity to discuss international cooperation in reducing methane emissions, including activities carried out by UNECE and IMEO (International Methane Emission Observatory).
The discussions and presentations during the XXXIII SEP clearly confirmed that reducing methane emissions and its efficient use are key challenges for the future of the mining sector.
