RFCS “European Coal in Transition: rising like a phoenix”

On 8.05.2024, the conference “European coal in transition: rising like a phoenix” co-organised in the Asturias region by EURACOAL and the European Research Executive Agency, was to promote the activities of the EU Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS).

During the workshop two of the largest projects co-funded in recent RFCS competitions were presented. Opportunities for other such projects in future 'Big-Ticket' calls of the RFCS research programme were discussed. Representatives from the European Commission spoke about the EU's priorities for coal-related research and why projects should be linked to a just transition. The event was attended by, among others, consortium members participating in the REM- project on reducing methane emissions from post-mining goafs. Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa was represented by Artur Badylak, Director at the Methane Drainage and Management Office. In his speech on the REM project implemented in the Pniówek mine, he presented the main assumptions of the project, the progress of the works and talked about the key indicators for JSW and KWK Pniówek. He also participated in a panel discussion on the impact of the adopted EU regulation on the reduction of methane emissions in the energy sector on the European mining industry. David Bonson-Hesener- Senior Policy Manager Euracoal was panel discussion moderator with Chiara Giamberardini Economic Affairs Officer, Sustainable Energy Division (UNECE), Vlad Păsculescu (INSEMEX) and Pedro Riesgo Fernández (University of Oviedo).
